WILLIAMSPORT — Pennsylvania Institute of Technology's surgical technique program has been continuously accredited by the Joint Health Education Program Certification Board.

According to the recommendations of the Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistant Education Certification Review Committee, the committee found that the college’s surgical technology program meets all its certification standards and guidelines, and the next comprehensive evaluation will be conducted in 2031. Approval was obtained at the committee meeting on September 17.

During a virtual site visit in May, a team from the certification review committee praised the college's well-equipped and well-organized laboratories, communication between the college and its clinical sites, and supportive advisory committees. The committee is composed of experts in professional fields who are responsible for reviewing projects and making appropriate certification recommendations.

The Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistant Education Certification Review Committee is sponsored by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists. Its mission is to provide certification services to verify the excellence of educational programs to promote professional development and ensure high-quality patient care.

The University of Pennsylvania offers an associate degree in surgical technology. Graduates of this major can complete the college's Bachelor of Applied Health Studies through an additional two years of online courses.

Surgical technicians are mainly employed in operating rooms, delivery rooms, clinics and surgical centers. They also work in private surgeons and dentists' offices. They assist in setting up the operating room and can prepare patients for surgery. They assist the surgeon during the operation and pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to the surgeon and surgical assistant, and forecast demand based on a comprehensive understanding of the surgical operation. They are responsible for all surgical supplies and maintain sterile areas.

On campus, surgical technology students from the University of Pennsylvania participate in simulated surgery. The Surgical Technology Laboratory consists of two operating rooms with operating tables and lights, anatomically correct mannequins, laparoscopic instruments and various other surgical instruments.

As part of the training, students can also gain practical experience in the local hospital.
